Body doubling: work next to someone to get started.
Alone, nothing starts. Next to someone who's working, it suddenly becomes possible. It isn't magic, and it isn't weakness: it's an outside frame for when willpower alone isn't enough.
What someone else’s presence changes
Widely reported by people with ADHD, still little studied scientifically: a tool, not a treatment.
An outside frame
Having someone else there creates a light commitment: we sat down to work, so we work.
Fewer decisions
The time and length are set together. No need to find the “right moment” to start on your own.
A calm anchor
Seeing someone stay focused makes it easier to come back to your own task when your attention drifts.
Four ways, even alone at home
Next to someone
A partner, a roommate, a coworker: each on their own task, in the same room. No need to talk.
On a video call, muted
A video call with a friend, each at your own work. Say what you’re about to do, then silence.
In a public place
A library, a café, a coworking space: other people being there is often enough.
In an online session
Silent group work sessions exist online. Same principle, from home.
A good session, in four rules
- Say in one sentence what you’re going to do (“I’m answering three emails”).
- Set a short length: 25 to 45 minutes.
- No chatting during the session, only at the end.
- Finish by saying what you did, even if it’s small.
Co-piloting: someone you trust sees your next step.
In Hindigo, someone you choose can see your next step and back you up. It's an outside presence, without being in the same room, for the moments when willpower alone isn't enough.

What is body doubling?
It's working in the presence of another person, in the same room or on a video call, each on your own task. The other person doesn't help: just having them there acts as a frame, which makes starting and staying focused easier.
Why does body doubling help with ADHD?
Many people with ADHD report that someone else's presence helps them start and stay on task: it's an outside frame and a light commitment when willpower alone isn't enough. It's a very common practice but still little studied scientifically: a tool, not a treatment.
How can I do body doubling alone at home?
On a muted video call with a friend, each at your own work, or by joining an online group work session. Say what you’ll do, set a short length (25 to 45 minutes), and say at the end what you did.
Can an app be a body double?
Partly. Hindigo's Co-piloting feature lets someone you choose see your next step and back you up: a form of outside presence, without being in the same room.
